Monroe who pointed out the update by Microsoft in a comment. If you have Microsoft Office version 14.1.2 or later Microsoft Query has been updated to Intel, as you can see in the screen shot below, instead of PowerPC, and will now work on your Mac with OS X Lion. Since I wrote this post Microsoft updated their Office 2011 software. In Microsoft 2010 (Windows) the new PowerPivot can replace Microsoft Query but in Excel for Mac there’s no replacement.Įxcel for Mac users should beware, Microsoft Query is an incompatible app in the upcoming Lion upgrade for Mac OS X. I made a career out of doing this very thing. Microsoft Query allows you to pull data into an Excel spreadsheet from “behind the wall,” so-to-speak, of a database or ERP system. (Notice that Open XML for Excel and Charts uses PowerPC too.) I would venture a guess that 99.4% of all Excel users have never used Microsoft Query, but I’m one who does and thought this might be significant to a select few. This will affect any Excel for Mac versions you might have on your computer - 2004, 2008, 2011. So I followed the instructions to check all the installed programs on my MacBook Pro and was surprised to find that Microsoft Query will be incompatible. Thanks for the help. The other day I read an article on how to prepare my MacBook Pro for Lion, the new Mac OS X coming out this month, and discovered that any application that requires PowerPC is incompatible with Lion and will not work. I have heard the Mac community is very helpful. I currently have it running on one of the old G3s I am using to convert years of old ClarisWorks, iWorks and MS Word 3&4 documents to PDFs. I also like the consistancy it offers across all the computers platforms in the network. I have been using it on all my personal computer for years, since the roll out of MSOffice XP. I don't want to open that office politics can of worms. If I install a new version of Office on one, all the staff will want the "shiny new thing" someone else has. That are far more critical to the long term structure and usiblity of the network. Upgrading Office 2011 isn't where I want to spend my IT budget right now, I have a lot of server side upgrades/projects in the works. If it is an issue with the Office version and not the OS I would rather scrap Office. I tend to be very conservitive when it comes upgrade vs clean install of OSs. Pretty sure I don't want to do the downgrade and then upgrade option. So, another option for you is to buy Office 2011 for Mac, may be easier than swapping OSs back and forth. I never liked the Apple Mail application, although most people who use it. I used Office 2004 prior to my Lion upgrade, so I bought Office 2011 home and business and it works very well, I really like Outlook as an email client, much better than Entourage. The only question in my mind is whether or not you can downgrade to an older OS without wiping out your files, so be sure to back everything up in the event that you have to reformat the drive to install Snow Leopard. If the problem lies with the incompatibility of the installer with Lion, that should cure the problem. Once it is properly installed and working, then do a system upgrade to Lion. Install Snow Leopard on the HD and then re-install Office 2008. Office 2008 and the installer are compatible with Snow Leopard. You will need a copy of Snow Leopard to do this, and since your computers came with Lion pre-installed you will have to get a copy of Snow Leopard. You might try this, but it will require a lot of time and effort. To KristinMT, Although Office 2008 is compatible with Lion, the installer is not. I'm about ready to chalk this one up to user error, unless someone can shed some light on this. I can't find any reports of this same situation, and I can't reproduce the error as reported to me. Don’t expect everything to work right away. Let someone else find out that stuff doesn’t work. So I accept that there might be a few blind spots in my knowledge base. Microsoft office 2008 compatible with osx lion mac os x Microsoft office 2008 compatible with osx lion install developers time to gather bug reports and put out some updates. I have 14 yr of support experince with MS OSs and 5 yrs with Linux, this is my first job where OS X is the dominate OS. I know that he is not coming close to that kind of stress on the resources. I have even gone to running multiple instances of large word and excel documents at the same time on this machine (1 gb+ active in memory) and can't get Office to crash. He is the only one that seems to have issues with it. It happens to my misfortune as the resident IT tech, the majority partner (The Big Boss) uses the crashy one as well as myself and other staff members. We use Microsoft Office 2008 on all our older mac (9 G5 iMacs running Leapord) of the two new Lion Macs that I installed MS Office 08 on, one works wonderfully and the second has been reported to have problems with random crashing of MS Office. Our firm recently purchased two new iMacs with Lion preinstalled. But the "real" theory behind MCTS is the math revolving around multi-armed bandit problems. The "original" MCTS algorithm used random play to guestimate the strength of a position. So where did the "Monte Carlo" name come from? Especially in the AlphaZero implementation, where there's no random play during inference / during games (!!). MCTS is very methodological despite the name. But Monte-Carlo in this instance meant "MCTS", and not "random play". Hmmm, you're right in that humans don't play randomly. Its a very elegant use of neural nets to improve the MCTS template. AlphaZero was interesting in that this manual tweaking of MCTS was left to the neural network training. Alpha-Beta search doesn't have any concept of this, and requires a Quiescence search engine "tacked on" for the feature. But its still very much a manually tweaked process: how much time to dedicate "exploring" bad moves, and how much time spent "exploiting" good moves (analyzing and making sure a "good" move is as good as you think it is). MCTS has a more elegant statistical theory behind it. The formula has some statistical guarantees about finding results that I never really understood, but hope to research and math-out one day. The precise formula involves a logarithm, division, and I think a square-root. Ex: every time you search a winning position 10,000 times, you want to search losing positions 100 times. The multiarmed bandit heuristic is to search "winning" positions more, but to "explore" losing positions less. Positions of "loss" or "draw" will be seen as a miss in the multi-armed bandit, but the "exploration" phase of the algorithm will randomly search a position anyway. Positions of "win" are seen as a "win" with a multi-armed bandit, and are explored further and analyzed further. It will NOT return until it gets that kind of evaluation. MCTS analyzes "deeper" positions, while Stockfish analyzes more exhaustively.Īnd again: classical MCTS (probably not AlphaZero) will keep going until it evaluates a position as "win", "loss", or "draw". MCTS on the other hand is almost ENTIRELY a quiescence search. Under certain conditions, Stockfish will search deeper (but not all conditions). I think my point is that Quiescence search is an explicitly programmed feature of Stockfish. Stockfish is also multithreaded and got a hash-table to remember previously searched positions (even positions from "another" branch of the tree). Stockfish uses iterated deepening as you've said, but that's very similar to Breadth-first search. Breadth-first search with Alpha-Beta pruning is how it is taught at universities. Nonetheless, the classical chess search algorithm is exhaustive. For example, Stockfish may recognize that some moves are "forced" and will iterate a specific variation deeper. The pruning in Alpha-beta is very much a heuristic that is applied on top of the template. So MCTS just naturally works with neural nets very well. which btw, performs way better than you'd expect.) might be used to "bootstrap" the exploration weights. Its possible that the original randomized MCTS algorithm (search randomly. Most of the input layers / early hidden-layers can be "recycled" between the "explore" function and the "evaluation" function.ĮDIT: I don't know how AlphaZero gets its "exploration" network trained up however. It seems like a very good way to have a single neural network mostly perform double-duty (aside from the two output nodes). It uses a neural-net to find "interesting" positions to guide the search, and the same neural net also evaluates the position (who is winning or losing). MCTS implemented by AlphaZero is different however. Think of it as a random-sample of the win/loss potential of a move. The reasoning is simple: on the average, a lot of "samples" of playthroughs will lead to a better estimate for win/loss probability. In effect, its a depth-first search, you play until you make a conclusion (potentially a "bad" conclusion). Classically, the original MCTS algorithms for Go would play all the way to the end of a game before searching other parts of the tree. Its an exhaustive search, like a breadth-first search. Monte-Carlo seems more akin to how humans play games.Īlpha-Beta pruning is the classical computer science algorithm, easier to understand, describe, and analyze. You're seen traveling across the game's exterior world before arriving upon an enclosed wasteland, setting forth within its central castle - one of the game's few man-made interior environments - and placing a clearly deceased girl upon a pedestal. You begin the game with very little setup. Shadow practically redefines the term "cinematic" in videogames, especially the sort where the player is in control during the entirety of the game. No game has done so much with so little, and no game has focused so much of its design and gambled so much of its experience on what essentially comes down to sixteen boss battles, the traveling to them between each fight and very little else.īut even with as simple a setup as this sounds, Shadow of the Colossus is an experience that is not to be missed. In this, Shadow excels more so than possibly any title in the history of gaming. Whereas most games rely on scattering their environments with living and breathing creatures, intricate structures, various types of foliage and the like to bring their worlds to life, the near-complete lack of any of these in the world of Shadow of the Colossus forces you to essentially paint your own picture of how the world came to be as it is, why it is essentially a wasteland, or even a prison if you will, for the colossi that inhabit said land. One thing that Shadow of the Colossus shares with ICO is its sense of solitude, one that overwhelms you with simultaneous feelings of calmness and despair. The graphics in the remaster look a lot sharper. The closest thing that comes to mind is ICO, the studio's spiritual precursor to Shadow. Shadow is a true work of art, the likes of which we've only seen approached by a very, very small number of games. What isn't difficult, however, is stating that not only is Shadow of the Colossus an absolute must-play experience, but one of the most important games you'll come across anytime soon.
